More than 9000 freshmen of 2021 who come from different areas set sail for the future at HNUST.
On the evening of September 19, Tang Yayang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University, gave "the first lesson" to all 2021 freshmen with the title of "being a thinking doer". Liao Xiangyue, vice president, attended the meeting, and heads of relevant departments and colleges were present.
"What is the history of HNUST?" "What is the current condition of it?" "What will happen in our future?" Tang led the freshmen to review the history, to understand the current situation of HNUST, and analyze how to get improved in the future.
Learning history makes us wise and taking action leads us to achieve great goals. Secretary Tang stated a university’s history is the most important, valuable and grounded history textbook. Therefore, he led the freshmen to review the big events in the development of HNUST over the past 70 years.
Secretary Tang said that HNUST has always maintained its pursuit of excellence and morality in the spiral historical process.
He hoped that the freshmen would appreciate HNUST's historical details, choice and spirit; raise confidence, establish lofty faiths and absorb the strength of endeavor.
He then introduced the foundation of the construction and development of HNUST from ten aspects such as HNUST's core values, talent training objectives and methods, disciplines, etc. He depicted the blueprint for the development of HNUST and proved to the freshmen with real examples and data that Hunan University of Science and Technology is a school rich in history, culture, with solid foundation, great potential and exceptional beauty, and it deserves students’ expectations and efforts.
He further pointed out that university education should teach students learning methods rather than just provide students with a place for learning, emphasize deep learning rather than just learning skills superficially, focus on cultivating generalists rather than just specialists, and try to be provident rather than narrow-visioned. He also said we students should remember President Xi's sincere exhortation to the young in the new era to shoulder the historic mission, enhance confidence to pull ahead, set lofty aspirations, practice noble morality, become a useful individual and take major responsibility.
