HNUST Student Donated Hematopoietic Stem Cell

On October 23rd, Deng Yingyou, a student from the School of Arts, donated his hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) to a leukemia patient.
Deng had a passion for public charity and became a volunteer of China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP) when he was a freshman.
Deng was told that his HSC primarily matched a leukemia patient’s HSC from the Management Center of HSC of Red Cross Society of China Hunan Branch in May and instantly agreed the donation. To keep his body in the best condition, Deng persisted in physical training and healthy diet.

In the following two months, Deng Yingyou cooperated with the completion of high-resolution blood sample testing, physical examination, collection plans and other procedures.

“Before collecting hematopoietic stem cells, I was required to be injected with mobilization agents for 4 consecutive days so that the hematopoietic stem cells could grow in large quantities and be released into the peripheral blood. Only then can we start the collection”, he recalled.

During the collection, as blood circulating in and out of the body through the blood cell separator, he felt his body becoming cold, and his limbs, face and even tongue were numb and painful for the drug input made the absorption of calcium in the body greatly inhibited.

Deng didn’t complete the collection of hematopoietic stem cells until 3:30 p.m. on October 23rd. He is the 11th hematopoietic stem cell donor in HNUST.

“It’s so rewarding to think that your donation could save a life or even a family.” He hopes that more people will join into the volunteer of Chinese Bone Marrow Bank to bring hope to more people.
