An Unprecedented Job Fair in HNUST

On March 17th, the 2018 job fair for college graduates of Xiangtan, Hunan Province, was held at Yuehu square of HNUST. It was the biggest one over the years and attracted a large number of job hunters, with a total of 518 enterprises from 25 provinces, including 74 Fortune 500 companies and 17 China top 100 firms, providing more than 36,000 jobs.  Chairman Liu Deshun and other leaders of HNUST came to the scene to encourage their students.

Employers’ Expectations for Candidates
On recruitment posters, degree was required as a prior condition. One of the interviewers, Liu Dongmei, explained, “Education background is a symbol of one’s learning ability. The higher the degree ranks, the greater potential he or she has.”

In addition, comprehensive competence was also of great importance in Liu’s opinion. She said that those, who had certain specialties or had served as class leaders or activity organizers, would be benefited in communication skill and management ability, which is indispensable for any position.

Another recruiter, Yu Zhizhen, pointed out that the applicant’s appearance, attitude and manner counted a lot in the interview. And Wang Saiwei, from a company of Jiangxi, thought that a good resume was crucial. He explained, “A good resume is an art work, which highlights one’s merits and catches the interviewer’s attention.”

Being Suitable–-Top Concern of Job Seekers
“A salary of 2,500 RMB would be acceptable.” Interviewers were surprised when Liu Yi, a graduate from School of Architecture and Art Design, had such a low expectation for salary. But she explained with a smile, “As green hands, we should find the most proper position and make progress gradually via learning.”

Zhang Haoqi, a graduate from School of Physics and Electronic Science, has just succeeded in an interview with a technology firm. He said happily, “My major offers me a wide range of occupations. But I won’t be picky because the best is a suitable one.”

Apart from graduates of HNUST, many job seekers came from other universities and colleges. Zhao Peihui, a graduate from a college in Changsha, attended the job fair with her boyfriend. They tried to seek jobs in Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan Area as they were both natives of Xiangtan. So the location came first for them.

Three Measures to Promote Employment
To secure students’ employment, HNUST has taken three measures to ensure its high quality, further broadening channels for employment of 2018.

One is to introduce the WeChat service platform of “Cloud Employment”, which contributed to the success of the job fair. It allows applicants to send resumes online to their desired units and realizes the resource sharing between companies and universities of Hunan Province.

The second is to organize the activity of “Invite What You Want”, in which each graduating class submitted the names of five favorite firms and the most popular ones will be invited by HNUST.

The third is to set a special recruitment session of alumni enterprises. As a result, 60 alumni enterprises attended this job fair.

Jiang Liping, Director of Admission & Employment Office, maintains that the difficulty of employment is determined by graduates’ attitude. He urged students to try their best rather than hesitate and wait when applying for a post. He said, “College graduates must stay positive and be ready for their next stage of life.”
