From Dec. 8th to 10th, the Sixth National GIS Applied Skills Competition for College Students was held in Nanjing Normal University, sponsored by Geography Science Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education and China Association for Geographic Information Service (CAGIS) and organized by Education and Popular Science Working Committee of CAGIS, Nanjing Normal University, and other departments. After the two-day’s heated competition, the team of HNUST, consisting of Wang Lu, Huang Huikun, Lin Jinyan and Chen Jiamian from the School of Energy and Safety Engineering, won the first prize for their outstanding performances. At the same time, HNUST was awarded the “Outstanding Organization Award” and Zhang Dongshui, the team’s adviser, gained the honour of “Excellent Guide Teacher Award”.
According to the report, this contest was the largest one ever in terms of the scale and the number of participants, in which 100 teams from 97 universities participated, including 391 students and 164 advisers. It aims to encourage college students majoring in GIS to master their professional application skills better and promote the training of high-level talents in applied GIS.
In recent years, HNUST has vigorously pursued the reform of the training model for innovative and entrepreneurial talents. It launched the Student Research and Innovation Program (SRIP) and established many good training bases, like National-local Joint Engineering Laboratory of Geo-spacial Information Technology, providing a large number of excellent candidates for the contest.
