On August 13th, Ouyang Xi, a student of Hunan University of Science and Technology (HNUST), donated 200ml of hematopoietic stem cell suspension at Xiangya Hospital of Central South University to save a 3-year-old child suffering from hematological disease. At the age of 21, he became the 73rd donor of hematopoietic stem cells in Xiangtan.
In May 2024, Ou's mother received a phone call from the Xiangtan Red Cross Society and was told that her son was successfully matched as a donor for a 3-year-old child with hematological disease. When first asked if Ouyang Xi would donate, she found it hard to believe. After double checking the information and verifying the details with the Red Cross staff, she was finally able to accept that her son had truly been matched as a donor.
"My mother used to watch videos of hematopoietic stem cell donors on TikTok, so she knew that what I would be saving someone’s life without harming my own health. Anyway, my family was very supportive." Ou said, "I felt a little dizzy after injecting the mobilization agent, which made my mother was quite nervous. But the doctor said it was a normal reaction. My mother and brother did their best to keep my mind occupied by talking with me the whole time have always talked with me. " Ou hopes that by sharing his feelings about donation, more people would understand the process of donating hematopoietic stem cells and voluntarily participate in it, bringing hope to many patients with hematological diseases.
In fact, the process of donating hematopoietic stem cells is as safe and harmless as blood donation, and donors don’t need to worry or be afraid.
According to the relevant director of Xiangtan Red Cross Society, a total of 4,041 volunteers in the city have been put into the China Bone Marrow Registry at present, of which 73 volunteers have successfully been matched and donated hematopoietic stem cells.
