On the morning of November 17th, the Xiangjiang High-end Academic Forum was held in HNUST， themed on “Seize New Opportunities and Pursue New Development”. Zhu Chuanqu, President of HNUST and Guo Shiyin, Secretary of HNUST Commission for Discipline Inspection attended the forum which was chaired by Wang Haihua, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Life Science and Health. Liu Shaojun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Hunan Normal University, Liu Xuanming, Professor of Hunan University, Tan Guishan, Professor of Central South University and Professor Yan Yuehong, Representative of HNUST alumni were also invited to attend the forum and discuss the opportunities and challenges for the development of life science. Relevant staff of the functional departments of HNUST and student representatives were also present.
Secretary Guo pointed out that this forum was of significance to solve such problems as the development orientation of Life Science and Health subject, development mode and management style. He also extended his gratitude to all experts and scholars for their valuable suggestions.
Professor Liu Shaojun stated that the Life Science and Health as a key support for medicine and health was an important subject. He also pointed out that it was not only a remarkable step following the trend but also a fresh start compatible with the era for HNUST to rename the school as “School of Life Science and Health”, which indicated that we would bring new development opportunities and face new challenges. Professor Liu hoped that HNUST could lay a solid foundation for education and leverage its strength to make contributions to our society.
Professor Liu Xuanming fully affirmed the dynamic integration between life science and health and introduced the important position of medicine in life science according to the experiences of running school for the same subject in Hunan University. He stressed that talents cultivation was one of the vital functions of universities and colleges, and he suggested that HNUST should make unceasing efforts to introduce talents, like young doctors, to provide development platform for high-quality talents.
Professor Tan Guishan advised that we should determine our development direction and construction goals in the early stage of multidisciplinary integration. He also supposed that we should trailblaze the best way of the transformation for the development of the school. Thus, the developmental speed will be lifted up, height raised, and depth deepened.
Professor Yan Yuehong considered that “person” was the key to seizing opportunities. Only if all persons were in place, could we determine the direction of scientific industries and centralize resources. At the end of the forum, Professor Yan expressed his good wishes to the development of the school.

So far, he has made outstanding achievements in such research fields as Chemical Basis of Pharmacodynamic Action of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Key Techniques about Modernization of TCM.
