On October 19th, themed“reach into the future”, the 10th National Metallographic Skills Competition for College Students(also named the “Leica Cup” after 2015), was held in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Under the elaborate guidance of supervisors, Wu Xianglian, Song Huihuang and Zhang Yiming, from School of Materials Science and Engineering, won 1 first prize and 1 third prize.
The competition was divided into the heat, the semi-final and the final. Wu Xianglian, Song Huihuang and Zhang Yiming stood out in the heat held by HNUST on June 4th and were led by supervisor Xu Hongmei to participate in the semi-final held from October 9th to 14th which included 1108 contestants from 370 national colleges and universities. Ultimately Wu Xianglian came to the fore through the fierce final and won the first prize, while Song Huihuang won the third prize.
The National Metallographic Skills Competition for College Students, hosted by the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Materials Specialty to Majors in Higher Education Under the Ministry of Education, is open to students at all undergraduate levels of general higher education nationwide. In December 2012, University of Science and Technology Beijing witnessed the opening of the first National Metallographic Skills Competition for College Students. And in August 2015, the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Materials Specialty to Majors in Higher Education Under the Ministry of Education, the sponsor of the competition, officially announced to lay specific direction on its organization. In the same year, the Leica Microsystems was officially used to support referees’ using of apparatus of the competition. Since then, the National Metallographic Skills Competition for College Students has been a national competition for college students recognized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and exerting significant influence nationally.
