On the afternoon of March 7, Professor Wan Buyan, the head of the “HaiNiu” scientific research team of HNUST, appeared in the “Deputies' Passage” of the National Two Sessions to narrate the story of “China's Depth”.

HNUST organized teachers and student representatives to watch the live broadcast and jointly witnessed the presence of Professor Wan in the session.

With the introduction of Wan Buyan, thunderous applause was heard in Liyan Building 4-1. The present teachers and students watched the live broadcast with rapt attention. Inside and outside the venue, many teachers and students were moved by Wan’s inspiring story on deep-sea research.

Tang Yayang, Party Secretary of HNUST, said that realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the nation cannot be achieved without self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology. “HaiNiu II”, developed by Professor Wan and his team, had achieved a breakthrough in Chinese submarine drilling technology. On the new journey to achieve the second centenary goal, we must explore the deeper and broader part of the ocean, and fully demonstrate the responsibility and demeanor of HNUST on the road to a powerful country in science and technology.

After watching the live broadcast, Dai Juchuan, Dean of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, expressed that Prof. Wan and the spirit of the “HaiNiu” team encouraged all mechanical and electrical people to stick to their original intentions and overcome key technical problems. Focusing on the construction of the “HaiNiu” team, the discipline of mechanical engineering will continuously improve scientific and technological innovation capacity to satisfy the major needs of the country and the new development strategies of Hunan.

After listening to Prof. Wan’s speech, Jin Yongping, Deputy Director of the National and Local Joint Laboratory for Exploration and Mining of Marine Mineral Resources, pointed out that many key technologies in China fall behind others at the current stage, but through arduous efforts, scientific researchers could eventually overcome these difficulties one by one. There may be many hardships and difficulties in the process, but it will also bring a great sense of achievement and national pride to the researchers.

Tang Wenbo, an underwater pilot of the Institute of Deep Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said excitedly that as a postgraduate student of the Marine Laboratory of HNUST, he felt honored to witness Prof. Wan telling the world about HNUSTers’ journey and goal to seek progress in promoting maritime work. He would live up to the sincere teachings of Professor Wan, march to the deep sea, and be responsible for the research!

Jiang Yan, the counselor of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, was greatly encouraged by Wan, who as a top scientific research leader, led his team to achieve continuous breakthroughs. She said that she would guide students to keep moving forward with firm ideals and beliefs.

Yang Huan, a student in the ideological and political education of 2021 at the School of Marxism, expressed that she was also deeply touched by Professor Wan’s story. In his short speech, the audience saw the progress of scientific research and technology and felt the strength of the country. As a college student in the new era of China, Yang would bear in mind her mission and responsibility and strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Li Le, who majors in measurement and control technology and instrumentation of 2020 said, “I was deeply moved by Professor Wan’s presentation. As a college student in the new era, I also need to study hard, and practice actively to contribute to the development of China!”
