Recently, the statistic released by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) showed that the paper co-published by the team of Professor Yan Mingli from School of Life Science, HNUST and that of Researcher Zhou Meiliang from the Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences was selected in Frontrunner 5000 (F5000)- 2019 Top Articles from Outstanding S&T Journals of China. The paper’s first author was 2017 graduate student Cheng Cheng, a HNUSTer of School of Life Science.

The paper’s follow-up study, Fagopyrum esculentum ssp. ancestrale-A transitional buckwheat species from diploid F. cymosum to F. esculentum, was published in the internationally renowned journal “Frontiers in Plant Science” in July 2020. The follow-up paper’s first author was Cheng Cheng, and Professor Yan Mingli and Researcher Zhou Meiliang were the co-corresponding authors. These achievements show that the scientific research and postgraduate training of School of Life Science in HNUST have entered a new level.

It is reported that Front Runner 5000 (F5000) refers to top articles selected by ISTIC, focusing on displaying China's excellent academic papers. The selection work is carried out on a rolling basis every year. The nominated papers were first recommended by the editors-in-chief or editorial boards of outstanding journals, then assessed by ISTIC and finally selected into F5000. The results are annually released before the end of the year.
